Host Elizabeth Dubois will talk to uOttawa scholars and other experts about everything from ethical engineering to environmental concerns, from privacy to data sovereignty.
As always, episodes drop every Wednesday morning every week. The first episode drops exceptionally Thursday October 1st, as we pay respect to the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th.

I'm an Associate Professor and University Research Chair in Politics, Communication and Technology at the University of Ottawa. My pronouns are she/her, and today we're talking about election laws in Canada and all of the potential threats and concerns and what we do about them with Mike Pal. Mike, can you introduce yourself, please?
Elizabeth Dubois: [00:00:05] Welcome to Wonks and War Rooms, where political communication theory meets on the ground strategy. I'm your host, Elizabeth Dubois. I'm an associate professor and university research chair in politics, communication and technology at the University of Ottawa. My pronouns are she/her.
This season, we're talking about social and policy issues surrounding uses and governance of artificial intelligence. And I know, I know yet another podcast, podcast series on AI. I get it, it's a bandwagon everyone's jumping on, myself included. But I do think Wonks and War Rooms has something a little different to offer. This season, we're focusing on what experts from social sciences, humanities, and law most often think is missed in conversations about AI development and governance. I'm trying to dig up perspectives that matter most for people, the perspectives that take into account things that right now are a little too easy to brush over. Perspectives from people maybe you haven't heard of before, and a few experts you definitely have heard from before. We've got experts from uOttawa and beyond ready to share their insights on AI and consent. The environment, health, education, ethics and engineering, and so much more. We've got guests like Professor Teresa Scassa, CEO of the First Nations Information Governance Center, Jonathan Dewar, CEO and chief scientific officer of the Bruyere Health Institute, Kumanan Wilson and Professor Kelly Bronson, just to name a few. This season, it's going to help you think about what AI could or should look like.
Elizabeth Dubois: [00:01:36] And in a lot of episodes, we take what's called a sociotechnical lens. So we try and think about the development and deployment of technology in its wider social context. So the season kicks off on September 30th, with episodes dropping every Wednesday morning this fall. As always, we're going to have annotated transcripts available in English and French, which link out to a bunch of extra resources for anybody who wants to dive deeper.
I also wanted to take a moment to acknowledge that I am recording today and for all episodes from the traditional and unceded territory of the Algonquin people. And I want to pay respect to the Algonquin people acknowledging their long standing relationship with this unceded territory. Reconciliation is something that's going to take a lot of work, and a small thing I'm able to do through Wonks and War Rooms is bring some of these ideas of reconciliation and colonialism into episodes. So we've done that throughout this season. We also have an episode dedicated to indigenous governance principles.
This season of Wonks and War Rooms is supported by the University of Ottawa's Office of Vice President, Research and Innovation, the Faculty of Arts, the center for law, Technology and Society, and my University Research Chair in politics, Communication and Technology.
